According to this Coachbuild.com forum, this is chassis 3AX199, “owned until 2001 by famous American actor Carroll O’Connor … Supplied originally to James Onslow Kingsmill Delap in Kenya (founder of East African Airways). It went to the UK in 1966 and from there to the USA later on … The boot could only be accessed from inside the car, to keep out the African dust.”
Thanks very much to user Phantom3 for the additional information.
Santa Monica, CA
Photographed April 2011
J.O.K. Delap was my great-grandfather and this car was built to his specification. Does anyone know where it is now?
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it since I took these pictures in Santa Monica over nine years ago. The house it was parked in front of hasn’t sold since then, so it’s very possible the car is still there, just garaged.
If you are still in the vicinity of where you saw this car, please could you enquire if it still exists. Someone in Illinois is claiming to have the chassis and has published a photograph of it – it would be a shame if it survived for 75 years, only to be broken up thereafter.
